Affordable emergency lighting. Still compliant.
The cheapest luminaire is rarely the cheapest emergency lighting. What really costs money is too many or badly planned luminaires, constant battery replacement and the effort for testing and documentation. That's where we start – without cutting corners on standards.
Emergency lighting becomes affordable through accurate design and low running costs, not through the cheapest luminaire. The biggest cost drivers are oversized or badly placed systems, frequent battery replacements and labour for testing and documentation. The system stays compliant if the luminaires are built to EN 60598-2-22, the design meets EN 1838 and every test is fully documented.
What applies?
- Accurate photometric calculation instead of rules of thumb: as many luminaires as needed, not as many as possible
- Long-life LiFePO4 batteries that last much longer than conventional NiCd or NiMH batteries
- Self-test luminaires to EN 62034: function and duration tests run automatically
- Emergency drivers: make suitable existing LED luminaires emergency-capable instead of adding new ones
- Digital logbook: no paperwork, no searching before an inspection
- Supply, installation and maintenance from one source – one fixed-price quote
This describes typical requirements, using Germany as the reference. What applies to your building depends on the building permit, fire safety concept, risk assessment and national or regional rules – exactly what we check during the free on-site survey.
Common mistakes
No-name luminaires without proof of EN 60598-2-22 save money at purchase – and put acceptance and your liability at risk.
1-hour luminaires where 3 hours are required have to be replaced entirely.
Missing tests show up at the next inspection or insurance claim at the latest – and then it gets expensive.
How we make it easy
We survey the building, escape routes and existing system and create a standard-compliant emergency lighting design – free and non-binding.
Exit sign, escape route and recessed luminaires plus emergency drivers – with self-test and LiFePO4 battery.
Every test documented digitally, deadlines monitored automatically – ready to show at any inspection.
Annual on-site inspection, all batteries replaced in year 5–6 and repairs – predictable costs instead of surprises.

Frequently asked questions
How much does emergency lighting cost?
It depends on building size, use, required duration and system. A reliable price can only be given after the design. That's why our on-site survey and design are free – followed by a fixed-price quote.
Can I use cheap emergency luminaires from the internet?
The luminaire must be built and marked for emergency lighting to EN 60598-2-22. Design, installation and regular testing still have to be carried out properly and documented – the luminaire alone does not make a compliant system.
How can I reduce maintenance costs?
With self-test luminaires that run monthly and annual tests automatically, long-life batteries and digital documentation. Many site visits become unnecessary and the logbook is always up to date.
Is it worth replacing old emergency luminaires?
Often yes: old luminaires with fluorescent lamps and NiCd batteries use more energy, need new batteries more often and cause more testing effort. We show you during the on-site survey whether an upgrade pays off.
How much does the design cost at NOTLUX?
Nothing. The on-site survey and standard-compliant emergency lighting design are free and non-binding.
